European Singles & Doubles Championships

The team representing Jersey in the European Singles/Doubles Championships had some good games but were unable to progress beyond the last 16 of the Nations Cup.

Team Jersey – Andy Bellamy-Burt, Toby Northern, Rosie Boleat (coach), Nicky Maindonald, Lorna Limbrick & Elaine Paisnel (coach)

Nicky and Toby played the singles matches, with Lorna and Andy playing the mixed doubles and Nicky & Lorna and Toby & Andy the women’s and men’s doubles respectively. Nicky won two out her five preliminary games, with the others winning one each, reflecting the high standard of all the teams at the competition.

All of them were ranked in the bottom 16 of the 32 teams that took part in each event, after the preliminary games and played in the second tier competition, the Nations Cup. Unfortunately none of them were able to progress, with Nick & Toby losing to Norway and Switzerland respectively, Lorna & Andy losing to Estonia and the women’s and men’s doubles losing to Greece and England.

Whilst the result might be disappointing on paper, all the team played well, had some good games and enjoyed a great experience; the highlights being Nicky’s two wins and her good performance, albeit an 8-13 loss to the French reigning European women’s champion.
