Liberation Team reach Quarter-Finals
– The eight strong team from Liberation Petanque Club reached the quarter finals of the Federation Cup section of the 2022 European Cup for Clubs and at least had the consolation of losing that match to Norway, the eventual winners.
In the opening round, Liberation first faced the Czech Republic and lost 10-21. Star of the match was Geoffroy Buffetrille, who won his single 13-12 then with Cassie Stewart won their double 13-4 and finally with Toby Northern & Laurent Pellaton won their triple 13-11.
After a bye, recorded as a win, they faced the Czech Republic again, to decide who would proceed to the main finals with Croatia. Although they played slightly better this time, they went down 7-19; Geoffroy & Toby won their singles, Callum Stewart & Andy Bellamy-Burt won their double. Once the Czech Republic won one triple, the match stopped, although the Liberation triple of Jean Stewart with Callum and Andy were ahead at the end.
The team had a bye in the round of 16 and then met Groruddalen Klubb of Norway in the quarter finals. The eventual Champions proved too strong, winning five of the six singles (Geoffroy again being the Jersey winner) and then two of the doubles to give them an unassailable lead of 16 points. In the third double, Cassie and (yes!) Geoffroy were ahead when the match finished.
